Social Service
Today social service is considered to be an important part of Education. A programme of social work to be done by the student during their long vacation.
They were required to go to villages, befriend the villagers, teach the illiterate, improve their sanitation and render them help in every possible way. The real Pakistanis lives in villages. About 60% of the population is rural.
Pakistan cannot make progress unless the lot of her teeming millions is improved. No social service can be better than the one done to uplift our villages.
One of the most useful forms of social service is to educate the illiterate. We have still about 60% of illiterate people. 3R’s may be imparted to children during the day-time and night schools may be opened to teach the adults who could not enjoy the benefit of regular education during their younger days.
Another aspect of the social service is to improve the health of the people, especially of the villagers. The villagers shall have to be taught how to keep their houses and lanes neat and clean and maintain themselves in perfect health and strength. There must be a proper drainage system in order to remove insanitary conditions prevailing in our villages.
Again, in a country where most of the villages cannot get even two square meals a day, no social service will be more welcome than that which goes to increase their income. This can be done by teaching some craft.
Revival of cottage industries must be tried with profit. The villagers must be kept busy, especially after the harvest time. They should be taught some spare time occupations to supplement their income.
Besides the above, there are other kinds of social service which can be rendered for the betterment of the poorer sections of society. They can, for instance, be taught that litigation and extravagant habits are bad and that a life of communal harmony and mutual goodwill is always better.
Social service can also be done in cities at critical moments. An epidemic may break out. The scarcity of food may result in famine. Heavy rains may give rise to floods and the earthquake may cause destruction.
At such critical times the highest form of social service is to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to help the needy, to protect the weak and to give shelter to the homeless.
At the time of partition of the country crores of refugees came to Pakistan. Our young men and women rendered very useful service to rehabilitate them.
Today social service has been made a part of education. The N.C.C. cadets the Boy Scouts and the Girls Guides are busy in making roads, digging canals, cleaning tanks and village wells, repairing School buildings and doing a hundred other jobs. Students and citizens give their contribution to the building of free Pakistan.
Free Pakistan needs blood and toil, hard-work and continuous labor. Mere words cannot take the place of work. Today the slogan is. “Talk Less and Work More.” Some universities have made social service compulsory for getting the first degree. It depends upon our educated young persons to infuse a new life into our masses by rendering useful social service to them.
Street Hawker
Street hawkers today are very common. They can be seen everywhere. They are in cities, towns and villages. They have become an important part of our daily life. They are petty traders who sell goods roaming from one street to another.
As such they are a great blessing They carry their articles in baskets placed on their heads Their calls are interesting. They sell vegetables, dresses, clothes and general goods. They also mend shoes, furniture, utensils etc. For old people, women and children, a hawker is always welcome.
There is much haggling also. A street hawker has to work hard to earn his living. He has to carry heavy loads on his head or shoulders to long distances His profits are meagre. With his small income, he has to keep his body and soul together. Within his petty income, he has to feed and look after his family.
His condition is really pitiable. Moreover, hawkers are unorganized and there is none to look after their interests. Sometimes, they are harassed by policemen. But a hawker can start his work with very small capital. He can earn sufficient to meet his daily needs with his hard work.
Sometimes, street hawkers sell cheap and harmful eatables which cause harm to people, especially children. They sell adulterated eatables. A street vendor can thus become a nuisance. Hawkers can be useful if they all are licenced and economically helped.
Their wares should be regularly checked and certified Hawking is also a very good means of self- employment. Thousands and thousands of people find employment in hawking.
If I Were Millionaire
It has been very rightly said that “if wishes were horses beggars would ride.” But it is wonderful to have wishes. Even though they may not come true, there is no harm in dreaming. Although I am not a poor man, I would like to have so much money that I could do something for those who are less fortunate than me.
I do not see any harm in having every luxury for myself if I turn I can do something worthwhile for the poor. It has been my dream to see each child well-nourished when I see children on the streets hungry, I feel sad. Although their parents try their best, they cannot provide them with food, clothing and shelter.
Pakistan has progressed a lot and we do have good medical facilities but poor people cannot afford them. If a poor child falls sick, there is every possibility that he might die due to lack of medicines and doctors.
I would like to build a hospital with modern facilities where people will get medical assistance free of cost would donate money to social service organizations like destitute homes, orphanages, homes for the aged and reformatories. Unfortunately when one becomes extremely rich, one tends to forget the plight of those who are less fortunate.
My motto would be, “live and let live” In fact, I would do all that I can for my parents too so that they may not have to break their backs working for us. I would like to enjoy the fruits of money but I would always remain sensitive and sympathetic to the agony of those who are less fortunate
