Plants Have Feelings Too

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about plants have feelings too. Although plants may “hear” their predators, “smell” their neighbors, and even “imitate” the forms of their hosts, they have evolved to be very sensitive to their surroundings. When they encounter predators, injury, or disturbances in their surroundings, this may cause them stress.

To penetrate the earth, plants utilize their roots to spread out. Certain plants, like the Venus flytrap, have specialized leaves that can detect and react to touch.

Plants produce defense compounds and increase the sugar content in their nectar in response to certain noises, such as caterpillars crunching on leaves, to attract possible bees.

Plants produce their food through photosynthesis, but taste and smell depend on specialized sensors detecting chemicals. They employ this process to locate nutrients in the soil, steer clear of harmful compounds, “smell out” their neighbors and locate family members.

Along with fungus, they also create mycorrhizal networks that may exchange signals of alarm as well as carbon, nutrients, and water. These findings show that forests are more than just a collection of trees and have major consequences for forest ecology.

Plants use their sense of sight to navigate their surroundings and are capable of detecting a wide range of light types, from ultraviolet to infrared. In a manner comparable to people and animals, they may also get overstimulated and stressed out, as well as paralyzed to lose their sensitivity. Plants are intricate and dynamic creatures that continually adapt to their surroundings. Thank you.

Plastic Waste Management

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about plastic waste management. In the current world, plastic pollution is a significant problem. They cannot be recycled, are not biodegradable, and pose a risk to the environment.

A considerable amount of plastic trash is thrown out each year. It would take four times as much plastic around the world as is thrown out in the United States alone. By 2050, there will likely be more plastic in our seas than fish if we do not act right away.

Plastic pollution is detrimental to people’s health as well as the environment. We must begin taking this issue seriously because if we do nothing, it will only become worse from here. Plastic waste is a significant problem. It has gotten into the food chain, poisoned our seas, and blocked our streams.

Yet, there’s also a huge chance. We can create new products and resources that could advance our economies, cultures, and ecosystems if we can alter the way we manage plastic. To make this happen, it is crucial to guarantee that everyone has access to fairly costly plastic recycling or reprocessing services so they may recycle their trash into new items.

Recycling plastic trash is one approach to lessen its influence on the environment, but it does not dissolve and takes up to a thousand years to break down. To do this, it is critical to identify and categorize the various types of plastic, locate a company that will buy surplus plastic waste, and locates a recycler that would accept it for free or at a little cost. Thank you.

Problems Of Overpopulation

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about the problems of overpopulation. The level of living of the populace is significantly impacted by population expansion.

As just 3% of Earth’s surface is covered by freshwater, global overpopulation may increase the demand for freshwater supplies. Because of the population’s rapid increase, Earth’s natural resources are being exhausted. These supplies are not as easily producible.

There will come a day in the coming years when these natural resources will be fully depleted if there is no restriction on population growth. The increase in population has a significant influence on climatic conditions. The global temperature is shifting as a result of human activities.

Over farming, deforestation, water pollution, eutrophication, and global warming are just a few of the negative economic and environmental effects of overpopulation. Although amazing things are being done to promote human sustainability on our planet, there are just too many people, which makes it more challenging to find long-term solutions.

The majority of the overpopulation is a result of patterns that started with an increase in birth rates in the middle of the twentieth century. Overcrowding in specific places can also be brought on through migration. Interestingly, overpopulation may develop in a location without there being a net increase in population.

It may occur if a population exceeds its carrying capacity and migration patterns do not change in an export-oriented economy. This circumstance is known as “demographic entrapment.” Thank you.

Technology

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of "Technology".

Wikipedia defines the term technology as follows: "Technology is the application of knowledge for achieving practical goals in a reproducible way. The word technology can also mean the products resulting from such efforts, including both tangible tools such as utensils or machines, and intangible ones such as software."

Technology is gaining more and more importance in our daily lives all over the world. This is no different in Pakistan.

The advent of technology has been increasing at a mammoth pace, the result of which is reflected in its growth in society. Over the last decade, electronic gadgets can be seen to have received major transformations.

Our smartphones, for example, stand testimony to this fact. Why, the various upgraded models we are seeing every now and then these days are a far cry from the Nokia phones we once had! This upgradation can also be seen in other electronic devices such as TV, refrigerator, and A/C.

Now, post Covid-19 again, technology has become an intricate part of our lives. Life without our mobile phones, laptops, and earphones seems impossible.

However, it is also indeed safe to say that we are beyond addicted to the easy life technology has provided for us. Humans have, in fact, become slaves to it.

Life without technology seems impossible nowadays. Forget smartphones, can you imagine a life without TVs, ACs, refrigerators, washing machines, laptops, or earphones? And that's just a few examples!

There is no doubt that technology has indeed made our lives simple. But, it is also true that our dependence on it is increasing alarmingly day by day.

Physical activities have come to a standstill. Technology has made us lead a sedentary lifestyle, which in turn leads to various life-threatening diseases such as heart attacks. Prolonged usage of electronic gadgets also leads to nerve disorders and eye problems.

Let's reduce our use of technology and stay healthy!

Thank you.

Teachers Day

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of "Teachers Day".

Teachers day is celebrated on the 5th of September every year. Before we going into the day as such, allow me to elaborate on who teachers are.

Google defines a teacher to be "a person who teaches, especially in a school." Wikipedia, meanwhile, states as follows: "A teacher, also called a schoolteacher or formally an educator, is a person who helps students to acquire knowledge, competence, or virtue, via the practice of teaching. Informally the role of teacher may be taken on by anyone."

But, is this all a teacher is?

Teachers, in real life, are so much more than that. They are an integral part of each and everyone's life and a good teacher would help shape one's life as well! A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has in fact said, "Teachers are the backbone of any country, the pillar upon which all aspirations are converted into realities."

Teachers are very important in every one of our lives as they play a crucial role in shaping who we are. More than teaching what is prescribed in the syllabus, good teachers go above and beyond, teaching us about life values, what is right and what is wrong, effectively serving as our faithful guides and companions.  Albert Einstein has, in fact, said "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." Indeed, teachers invoke curiosity in us from a very young age, shaping and molding us for the better.

Kalam has also said "Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber, and future of an individual. If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honor for me." Hail teachers!

Thank you.

Science

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of "Science".

Google defines the term "science" to be "the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained."

Again, Wikipedia similarly defines the term as follows: "Science is a systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. Systematic reasoning is tens of thousands of years old."

Simply put, "science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence." Thus evidential proof as a result of experimentations is of importance here. This is precisely why science has become very important, especially in today's times.

Science, especially scientific findings, is a game changer in numerous fields such as medicine, technology, and even war. Without science, a lot of diseases would still be life-threatening and many of the technological advancements we have today would be nonexistent. This, I'm sure, would put us back to the vulnerable human beings we had once been.

Scientific advancements are crucial for the development of any country. Japan is the best example. Being a global leader in robotics, natural sciences, aerospace explorations, and biomedical research areas, Japan is now one of the most advanced countries in the world.

Similarly, in the medical field, science is crucial. We have to be thankful for both the medicines already available and the ones now being researched to cure various diseases only because of science, without which we would have to suffer.

A nation's defense also is enhanced by scientific military advantages wherein it can secure its borders.

Science is our future.

Thank you.

Procrastination

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about procrastination. The habit of putting off a task or activity until later is known as procrastination. One of a person’s worst habits is the tendency to push off doing tasks.

People frequently put off finishing a task or carrying out a plan until later because of laziness. Life is unpredictable, thus it’s likely that things may change and one won’t be able to complete the task at all. It is wise to put off doing bad things, yet we are right and we must complete the task at hand on schedule.

The tendency to put off a task is one of the main causes of procrastination. A person’s edge of need for action will be lost if they indulge in luxury and idleness. When someone begins to worry about how the work will turn out, they often put it off till later. Low self-esteem, weak resolve, lack of attention, distraction, and excessive impulsivity are other reasons why people put off doing their tasks till later.

In addition to raising stress levels and denying oneself opportunities, procrastination has several negative effects. Individuals, groups, communities, and countries can all suffer as a result. We must examine our behavior to see if we truly understand the risks of procrastination and avoid it. The most critical information is that procrastination is a negative habit and that excessive hurrying or haste is also bad behavior. Thank you.

Regulating The Use Of Social Media

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about the regulation of the use of social media. A discussion over how social media platforms should be regulated is necessary due to their effects on human behavior and society.

There are ethical and privacy issues due to big digital corporations imposing unreasonable terms and conditions on Pakistani customers, and those under the age of 18 are most at risk for being victims of cybercrimes involving data breaches.

Social media algorithms also support social division by isolating users from alternative viewpoints and creating “echo chambers” or “filter bubbles”. This is bad because it weakens the democratic structures that uphold fundamental rights like free expression.

Additionally, fake news, financial fraud, threats to national security, abuses of human rights, online abuse and defamation, denial of agency, and the loss of freedom of thought have all resulted as a result of this.

Controlling social media might be damaging to free speech, monopolies, competition, and the values of an open and accessible Internet. Moreover, it goes against the idea of self-regulation by allowing an inter ministerial committee of government employees to act as an appeals body for any self-regulatory activity.

Moreover, censorship might result from public control of content moderation, which would do much more “unimaginable harm to a democratic polity.” Thank you.
